The deduction is collected at a rate of $0.48 for every tonne of wheat and $0.56 for each tonne of barley sold. The national checkoff is collected by ABP on behalf of the Canadian Beef Checkoff Agency (the Agency) and is paid to the Agency for national beef cattle research, marketing and promotion. Documents are made publically available through an annual report. (The Alberta Barley Commission does the actual collection work.) This checkoff was set off as a transitional fund — it’s only in place until July 31, 2017. Alberta Barley uses International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and is audited each year. Along with the end of the Canadian Wheat Board's single desk, the Alberta Barley Commission became the administrator of a new checkoff system to fund market development and research. For example, wheat farmers in Alberta pay a total of $1.18 per tonne, consisting of the Western Canadian Deduction of 48 cents per tonne and an Alberta Wheat Commission checkoff of 70 cents per tonne.
